A WALK ACROSS THE SUN

The book  ‘ A Walk Across The Sun’  written by Corban Addison speaks enough about human trafficking which of children especially girls are big part.
In this book the author have told us about the sisters Ahalya Ghai and sita who have left orphaned and homeless when tsunami strikes  their  village taking their family along. When they start their journey towards their school to expect the shelter they unfortunately come across human traffickers who trade them to Mumbai in red light area kamathipura. Thus both sisters are thrust into a hidden world of illicit commerce where the most valuable prize is the innocence of a child.

In  human trafficking they are often used to trade drugs within and outside country. Human trafficking is a hidden crime and often exact statistics are not available. According to study of National Crime Records Bureau one child at every eight minute gets disappear. Approximately 75% to 80% of human  trafficking is for sex. The children  are  also trafficked  for organ harvesting.
Children are often sold by their own family members. The book ‘ wise and otherwise’ by Sudha Murthy have mentioned one incident where a girl gets soled to brothel by her own younger brother. 10 year old named gita got sold by her own aunt. The younger are kids the more money traffickers make. Human traffickers can make 20 times more which they have paid while buying them.

A 2003 study in India found that on average single sex slave earned her pimp at least 2,50,000 rupees a year. Researcher estimate that more than 80%  trafficking victims are female. Over 50% of human trafficking are children. In India children are traded within and outside the country to  Nepal and Bangladesh. There are estimated 13 million children around the world who are victims of human trafficking.

Throughout the history child marriage has been popular. Back then kings used to marry their children for political and financial bonding.
In today’s world Still child marriage is prevalent in developing countries and widely accepted in spite of their drawbacks. Poverty , lack of education awareness , illiteracy , ignorance , dowry are the reasons behind the child marriage. There is common acceptancy  in society that a girl cannot earn her own livelihood and thus she gets married where she has to be dependent on men she has gotten married and follow whatever he tells her to do. In some or another way she becomes slave of his.

In child marriage girl is not the only one who gets affected and gets their innocence snatched . boys also highly gets affected by the marriage. The kids who doesn’t even know the meaning of marriage gets bonded and left on mercy of fate. In these kind of marriages a girl child  gets pregnant  earlier in stead of her capability to carry the child. It severely  affects the physical condition of  that girl which also result in abortion of child or premature death of that child. As they are not aware of reproductive issues they more likely die while child birth.  Girls younger than 15 years are 5 times more likely to die in child birth.
In Child marriage both girl and boy gets stuck in the cage. Their happens to be no room for personality development. And hence this crucial practice of child marriage gets pass on by generation. Girl child in these marriages often experience domestic violence from elderly lady of the house. When the age gap is more the both partners girl even get slapped or sexually abused from her husband. Girl kids often go through stress. Our society is structured in such a brutal way that a girl cant even go to her parents with her grievances. A girl have no way to go after this harassment as she has been married early so she had no scope to gain education and thus she is incapable of earning anything by herself thus she remains with no option but to stay with her abusive family.

The laws has been passed to curb child marriages. ‘APNI BETI APNA DHAN’ is India’s first conditional cast transfer programmes dedicated to delaying young marriages across India.  The government of india have took steps to discontinue child marriage. They have passed the prohibition of child marriage act 2006 has been made effective from 1st November 2007 in India.

CHILD LABOUR

In today’s world child labour is a curse foe society. We see children mainly in cities working on road construction and building construction sites but very effectively we ignore them. ‘We see them but we prefer to see through them’. We are so ignorant and caught in our own lives that when a kid pass through us carrying luggage of others which is not at all suitable for his physical condition we don’t even get feeling of helping them to put them off their misery.

Child labour doesn’t allow a child to go to school as the kid is preoccupied to give hand to their parents in work in hazardous job. In these cases parents are also unwilling to send their children to schools as they are more concern of earning meal of one time. Poverty and illiteracy are main problem behind child labour.  Child labour deprives the ability of kid to grow. It even affects them physically,  mentally and emotionally.  Children are our hopes of future by allowing child labour we are directly or indirectly putting our future in danger. Child labour instead of their age contributes in house hold income from 20% to 40%.
There are lack of  other options  against child laour. Even if we rehabilitate them there are no other alternatives to put them in. some of the times their own parents don’t allow them . There are even chances that child labour becomes hereditary as at very early age kids put their foot on path of their parents and learn domestic works. Most of the times girl are caught in this as because of lack of awareness of education girls are not sent in schools and hence they are assumed to work in domestic business as they have nothing else to do.
Sometimes in most of rural areas  even if schools are available they are too far away and unreachable. Even in some schools fees are so high that parents cant even afford the fees. In case if couple have 2 or than that children they give priority to boy child to give education.
In India Untouchability is still prevailing, in result the children gets affected the most. Especially in rural areas untouchables that shudra  are not allowed in schools because of casteism which doesn’t give them chance to even try to get in main stream.
Big companies prefer child labour because they get paid less. When children are engaged in physically hazardous job they get exhausted more quickly which hampers their physical condition which make them more pro to diseases and make them vulnerable.
The government had put steps forward to immunize the child labour. Article 24 of India’s constitution prohibits child labour.
